Director Ryûhei Kitamura has admitted that he was unhappy with how Toho edited the film, as they felt it was running too long so trimmed or removed numerous scenes, but he felt this ended up hurting the film in the long run. These cut scenes included Hedorah attacking an island, Hedorah and Ebirah battling Godzilla off the coast of Japan, the human characters noticing Mothra's participation in the final battle and reacting to her sacrifice to destroy Gigan, a reveal that Mothra was actually alive and her return to Infant Island (which is still glimpsed during the end credits), the two unfortunate Sydney residents who are devoured by Zilla are given a scene together before the monster attacks, and Godzilla finishing off Anguirus, Rodan and King Caesar after defeating them, this was cut as an act of mercy since they had been Godzilla's allies in the past and because the producers didn't want the suits damaged. Also Kitamura originally wanted a proper fight between Godzilla and Zilla upon learning that they had permission to use the American monster, but this had to be scrapped due to the schedule, so he decided to have America's take on Godzilla killed quickly, hoping it would at least get a big laugh from audiences.
