The number of 200,000 mentioned as the size of Saladin's army is an exaggeration. It likely only consisted of about 12,000 cavalry and 30,000 infantry, plus assorted non-military religious volunteers; perhaps 50,000 at the most. At Hattin it faced a crusader army of approximately 1,200 armoured knights, perhaps 2,000 lighter cavalry, 10,000 foot soldiers and a number of crossbowmen from the Italian merchant fleet, totaling perhaps 15,000-20,000 in all.
