Mary Tyler Moore is indeed a failed ballet dancer, much like her character. "I'm a failed dancer but a successful actress" she always says in interviews. In one episode, "Hail the Conquering Gordy"; Mary consoles Ted who is depressed about not reaching Walter Cronkite superstar status; and confesses her own failed ballerina aspirations. After Ted leaves; Mary goes back into dancer mode; stands like she is at the bar in first position; and then attempts a Relevé; a dance move where you stand on your toes and walk. She then screams "Ahhhh!"; and goes back to her normal stature again; realizing the craziness of her ballerina dreams now for the first time. This is another instance when James Burrows, James L Brooks and company were drawing on the actor's real life histories to help inform the characters.
