It was originally intended that Elaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus') formidable father, famous author Alton Benes, of whom Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) and George (Jason Alexander) are terrified, be a recurring character, but in an odd case of life imitating art, Lawrence Tierney really did frighten and intimidate the other cast members, so it was decided he should never return. Unsurprisingly, Tierney went on to play tough guy Joe Cabot in Quentin Tarantino's Le iene (1992).
