Several scenes were actually filmed in highly public places with gatherings of off-camera spectators observing the filming. In many interviews, John Cleese discussed Lancelot's running approach shot toward "Swamp Castle" which was filmed in Hampstead Heath, a park in London. Cleese said he had to stand on a park walkway awaiting a visual cue to begin running across the field toward the camera. Totally alone and in full costume, he had random conversations with several passersby who, understandably, had no idea what a man in a medieval costume holding a broadsword was doing there.
