The scene where Serge speaks to Axel was filmed without Eddie Murphy being there for the most part. Bronson Pichot revealed, in an interview years later, that Murphy was severely depressed about his faltering career at the time, and suffering from such low energy levels that director John Landis dismissed him and stood in himself for Eddie Murphy, off-screen, so as to give Pinchot a stand in to look at and speak to.
