The monster is very different from his portrayal in the novel, where he is depicted as very intelligent, articulate, and literate, rather than the mute brute seen in the film. He is also a deliberate, merciless killer in the novel, vowing to kill everyone close to Frankenstein for his refusal to make a mate for the monster. The monster's loneliness is best portrayed in The Bride of Frankenstein.
