The original script was vetoed by producer Steven Bach after he told Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro that Jake LaMotta was a "cockroach". De Niro and Scorsese took a few weeks in La Samanna (St Martin) to do an uncredited re-write of the script, during which time, the two found some sympathetic aspects of LaMotta, which eventually satisfied the producers.
