Ombre rosse (1939), the movie that Orson Welles had seen more than forty times while preparing the shooting of "Citizen Kane", had led to an Oscar win for Thomas Mitchell. The actors who portray Charles Foster Kane, Orson Welles and Buddy Swan, both have worked with Thomas Mitchell: Welles provided the opening narration for Come Robinson Crusoè (1940) and Swan played Mitchell's son in La famiglia Sullivan (1944).
