The film spent 16 consecutive weeks as the number one film in Japan ever since it was released in that country on March 13, 2014. It eventually broke the record set by La città incantata (2001) as the highest grossing animated film in Japan, as well as the second highest grossing film in that country behind Titanic (1997).
