At one point in the novel, Gaunt is seen reading Treasure Island, and later quotes from Hamlet. Director Fraser C. Heston directed his father Charlton Heston in Treasure Island. The older Heston also played the Player King in Hamlet (1996). Amanda Plummer's father, Christopher Plummer, has played Hamlet himself.
