The film has been likened to All'inseguimento della pietra verde (1984). In both that movie and this one, the lead actress plays a romance novelist - Kathleen Turner as Joan Wilder in Romancing the Stone and Sandra Bullock as Loretta Sage in The Lost City. Turner and Bullock appeared together in the TV documentary Women on Top: Hollywood and Power (2003).
