Several elements of the Rey/Kylo Ren relationship in the Disney trilogy seem inspired by the acclaimed role-playing game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003), which also featured a Jedi (Bastila Shan) and a Dark Side user (the protagonist, although his eventual path in the game is left to the player's choice) in a romantic relationship of sort and were stated to have a special bond in the Force comparable to the one between Rey and Kylo. Kylo's helmet is very reminiscent of one displayed in the game; at the end of the movie Rey is shown with a yellow lightsaber, which was the color of Bastila's own lightsaber.
