Dante Basco revealed in an interview that at first he was very intimidated by Dustin Hoffman who has a reputation for being a big method actor. Reportedly Hoffman would antagonize Basco offscreen to get into character as Captain Hook and Rufio were nemeses. Basco's acting coach just assured him that Hoffman had a reputation for being that way and wasnt intentionally trying to be mean or hurt the young actor. During breaks Basco watched Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Lenny (1974) and would ask Hoffman questions about his roles in those films and Hoffman then realized that Basco wasnt just an ordinary kid actor but wanted to be treated as a real, serious actor and Hoffman took him under his wing and coached him for several days on their scenes together. He said to have that experience with Hoffman was legendary.
