Nicholas Meyer had Admiral Kirk waste away in the absence of starship adventures. The theme of wasting away in the absence of stimuli was derived by the literary character Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), who has similar reactions when not facing new cases.
