John F. Kennedy may have caused the Cuban Missile Crisis by ordering the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961, which compelled Castro to seek nuclear protection from the Soviet Union to deter a future invasion. It is now known that the Kennedy administration was still planning a military invasion of Cuba as late as August 1962. Kennedy had refused to provide air support for the Bay of Pigs invasion, even though Eisenhower had provided air support for the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état.
