The cast includes Conrad Veidt who became an international star twenty years earlier portraying the somnambulist murderer Cesare in Il gabinetto del dottor Caligari (1920), and Ernst Deutsch who had been the first choice to play that role, their only time as castmates being in this American production. While Deutsch is uncredited in his role in 'Escape" as Baron von Reiber, he later played another 'baron' character but with quotations around the royal title suggesting it might be manufactured, that being the role of 'Baron" Kurtz in Il terzo uomo (1949). And although he didn't get the Cesare role, Deutsch was in a legendary silent horror film the same year as "Caligari," as Rabbi Loew's aide in Il Golem - Come venne al mondo (1920), both the directorial and acting title roles of that film performed by Paul Wegener, an Expressionist filmmaker whose earlier work had been one of the major influences of the makers of "Caligari."
