The confessions of the "Thought Criminals" Rutherford (Peter Frye), Aaronson (Joscik Barbarossa), and Jones (Anthony Benson) were based on the Soviet show trials of the 1930s, which included fabricated confessions by prominent Bolsheviks Nikolai Bukharin, Grigori Zinoviev, and Lev Kamenev to the effect that they were being paid by the Nazi government to undermine the Soviet regime under Lev Trotskiy's direction.
