During the series fifth season, the show noticeably goes in a more family friendly direction. In the Blossom E! True Hollywood Story, creator Don Reo revealed NBC told him to tone down the show and made the producers do more "family-friendly" fare. During this time, NBC put its foot down about dark and realistic humor, or humor that didn't appeal to an 18-49 urban audience. By 1992/1993, when Seinfeld had created the "no hugging, no learning" mantra, it was weird for a sitcom to have dramatic moments, and so any Blossom episode with a serious issue in it might be promoted by NBC as something unusual.
