In January 2020, Francesca Gregorini, director of The Truth About Emmanuel (2013) filed a lawsuit against M. Night Shyamalan and Tony Basgallop accusing them of stealing the idea for this series from her film. Shyamalan and Basgallop both denied the charge saying they had never seen her film and it was just a coincidence.
