A deleted scene has a Confederate soldier coldly executing a wounded black Union soldier. Such scenes did happen during the Battle of the Crater. In one account, a Confederate soldier witnessed two comrades whipping a black soldier with the ramrod of his musket before executing the black soldier. There are estimates that as many as 2-300 black soldiers were executed after the battle by vengeful Confederates. It wasn't a one off occurrence. There were multiple times and battles where Confederate troops openly executed wounded or surrendering black troops.
