Joe Johnston had originally lobbied to direct Il mondo perduto - Jurassic Park (1997), but was turned down when Steven Spielberg decided to return for that film. To make up for this, Spielberg passed the director's job to Johnston for this film when he decided to direct A.I. - Intelligenza artificiale (2001) instead.
