Both of Margaret Mitchell's grandfathers were Confederate veterans. Paternal grandfather Russell Crawford Mitchell served in the Texas Brigade, often referred to as Hood's Brigade. After being severely wounded in battle, he spent the rest of the war as a nurse. Her maternal grandfather John Stephens was a captain in the Confederate Army.
