Knowing that Johnny English was based on his character from a series of Barclay's Bank Barclaycard advertisements, originally produced for the U.K. banking market, does give this movie a strange air of an extended advertisement, or a big-budget corporate video for the bank, or a sponsored movie like Il mio amico Mac (1988). Alternatively, viewers may wish to follow a fan theory that Johnny English may actually be Rowan Atkinson's "Small-Fawcett" character from Mai dire mai (1983), later in his British Intelligence career, with a name change within the same story universe.
