To explain why the public in 1988 doesn't recall or remember the 1953 invasion, a war which resulted in millions dead, several cities destroyed, and at least one use of an atomic bomb on US soil, the series states that a collective form of amnesia overcame the public, coupled by government efforts to cover up the 1953 invasion. In later episodes, the idea is floated that the 1953 invasion was a type of covert operation, nothing like what was seen in the real world 1953 film, and (in a manner of breaking the fourth wall) that the film itself was produced as part of the government coverup.
