Terminator 2 - Il giorno del giudizio (1991) came under fire for being too sentimental when it came to Arnold Schwarzenegger being a good Terminator. Jonathan Mostow tried to avoid that by adding some ambiguities to Schwarzenegger's character, e.g. refusing John Connor's orders, even mistreating him in certain scenes, being corrupted by the T-X at the climax, etc. Mostow said that the sentiment was appropriate for the second movie where the Terminator was a sort-of father figure to John, but for this movie, he wanted Terminator to be more of a tough drill instructor like Louis Gossett Jr. in Ufficiale e gentiluomo (1982).
