The death of Captain Ross in Season 9 was supposed to be the passing of the torch for Goren and Eames to Nichols and his new partner, Det. Stevens (played by Saffron Burrows) who replaced Wheeler (played by Julianne Nicholson), who left for another government position and because she had had a baby at the end of Season 8. This however didn't sit too well with fans of the show which felt that this was not the way for Goren and Eames to leave the show. A final season was then ordered with only 8 episodes which gave them a plausible conclusion to the series.
