New Line Cinema was so worried about how the film would be received by audiences that CEO Bob Shaye personally oversaw a different cut of the film to be used for test screenings. Paul Thomas Anderson was so upset by this that he decided to sabotage the screenings. Just before the audience was scheduled to enter the theater, Anderson would walk past them and pretend that he had just seen an earlier screening of this studio cut. He would shake his head and loudly proclaim "this movie sucks! You're gonna hate it!" In the end, Shaye's cut received lower scores than Anderson's cut, and was discarded.
