Reportedly, executives at 20th Century Fox we're panicking at the time because Warner Brothers was making this star-studded sequel to a massive hit film, but all Fox was working on to compete with it was "a low-budget science fiction film with a cast of mainly unknowns and an inexperienced director." That film was Star Wars (1977). When they were released, Exorcist II grossed $5.8 million during its first weekend, which qualified as the "biggest two-day opening" in Warner Brothers history. But then it abruptly tanked at the box office as a result of negative word-of-mouth and reviews. Star Wars, of course, became a global phenomenon.
