It is revealed near the end of the movie that Valak (demon of snakes) possessed Frenchie with a snake crawling out of its mouth into his. This is similar to scenes in other Conjuring Universe movies (mainly Annabelle 2: Creation (2017) and L'evocazione - The Conjuring (2013)) where a scene of possession happens oraly, only in these cases instead of a snake it is a black liquid substance.
