Chris Columbus wanted the movement of the camera to be snake-like, reflecting the basilisk's movement throughout the castle. Hence, certain scenes were filmed using hand-held cameras, which allowed for more fluid movement. Columbus, at one point, actually steered the camera operator by the shoulders in order to get the shots exactly how he wanted them.
