When Gollum says "murderer," and Smeagol cries and whimpers at the sound of it, this is a clue to Smeagol's past (Deagol's death flashback in Il Signore degli Anelli - Il ritorno del re (2003). Smeagol's genuine feelings of guilt and remorse, over murdering Deagol, are valid hints that Smeagol, a.k.a. Gollum was never evil from the beginning, but was merely a sad, gloomy, and innocent creature who was tortured and corrupted by the One Ring.
