When Archie's seated in the National Assistance Board, the man next to him shouts, 'Nurse Edith Cavell was the biggest traitor this country ever had'. Edith Cavell was the British matron of a hospital in Bruxelles. After Belgium was overrun, she helped Allied soldiers escape into neutral Holland. In August, 1915, she was caught, tried and condemned to death. The night before her execution by firing squad, she spoke to the prison chaplain: 'I realize patriotism isn't enough. I must have no bitterness or hatred of anyone.' Her heroism was furthered in the films Dawn (1928) and La storia d'Edith Cavell (1939).
