Despite starring a fledgling Jack Ryan, this movie was never meant to be a prequel to the other movies in the Jack Ryan film franchise. The Harrison Ford movies Giochi di potere (1992) and Sotto il segno del pericolo (1994) were direct follow-ups to Caccia a Ottobre Rosso (1990), because despite the re-casting of Alec Baldwin's role, James Earl Jones was in all three movies as Admiral Greer. Nevertheless, in this movie, we see Jack Ryan meet John Clark, something which also happened in Sotto il segno del pericolo (1994). Therefore, this movie might be best understood as a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise into the present day, since Hunt for Red October is a Cold War thriller, and Sum Of All Fears clearly takes place in a post-Cold War setting.
