The locomotive that was used for the scenes that killed the greasers in the train tunnel in the film, was the Southern Pacific 5021. A 4-10-2-type steam locomotive built by ALCO in 1926. Although it was never restored to operation for filming, it was pushed by a diesel locomotive to simulate the effect of it moving, while a smoke machine was used for the steam coming out of the stack. Additionally, the whistle itself was recycled from Norfolk and Western 1218. Today, Southern Pacific 5021 is currently on display at the RailGiants Train Museum in Fairplex, Pomona, California.
