David Vickery and his team at Industrial Light & Magic created the volcanic special effects and consulted volcanologists for research. According to Vickery, the team inquired how a volcano of the type used in the movie, might erupt. They also requested information regarding the various stages of lava and pyroclastic flow. He later told an interviewer that "We are speeding it up a bit for the sake of our movie, but it is definitely all based on real science."
