The scenes set in the future (after the virus has destroyed most of humanity) manifest a signature look called "Steampunk, which may be defined as, "a sub-genre of science fiction that incorporates retrofuturistic technology and aesthetics inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery." To put it more simply, futuristic technology is made to look like older technology that has been reworked toward a new end, but retaining the old look. An example would be Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh's inventions in the movie "Wild Wild West" (1999). Terry Gilliam also use this look for his film "Brazil," which is often mentioned in comments about this film.
