Upon Dick Van Dyke's promotion to becoming the executive producer, Charlie Schlatter was his first choice for the role of Dr. Jesse Travis, seeing Van Dyke had always admired Schlatter's work. This was also Charlie's first television role, replacing Scott Baio.
