John Keel was widely known as a prankster, and a man who lived by the adage "never let the truth get in the way of a good story", according to peers/fellow writers/UFOlogists in the 50s and 60s, like Frances Hitchens, Jacques Vallee and even Allen Hynek.; In the 90s, British magazine covering 'paranormal' and unusual topics "Fortean Times" sent investigators to interview the witnesses Keel cited, surrounding he Silver Bridge collapse, the descriptions of several key witnesses revealed that, although SOME elements were true, Keel had embellished much of the story; Most notably, the "prediction" of the bridge collapse never happened; it was only written by Keel AFTER the collapse had already occurred. And, although Keel claimed otherwise, the only person who ever claimed witnessing "Indrid Cold" was Keel himself. It's true there WERE "Mothman" sightings in Pt Pleasant, going back years before KeeL showed up. And several of those Keel spoke to DID reporting seeing "Mothman". But Keel embellished these accounts- One woman reported seeing "Mothman" flying over her car, but Keel reported she saw the creature flying, then perched on the bridge, staring at her, which she later denied. There are surviving TV interviews interviews with Keel, where it's evident that even HE never took his own stories very seriously. It's arguable whether or not he even seriously intended to "decieve", or if he just treated his writing like a tongue-in-cheek prank, where he expected readers to get the joke.
