When Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) calls on Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman), Mandela asks him to sit in a certain chair so Mandela won't have to stare into the sunlight when the two men talk. Here's why: During his years of imprisonment on Robben Island, Mandela, like the other inmates, was forced to work in the island's lime quarry. Prisoners weren't allowed to protect their eyes from the sunlight that bounced off the white stone; years of such exposure led to permanent vision damage and sensitivity to sunlight.
