According to a Corridor Crew interview with Sean Walker of WetaFX, the final character shots of Aldrich Killian were entirely digital. The filmmakers wanted a pick-up shot of Guy Pearce to complete the scene, but Pearce had already moved on to other projects and was sporting facial hair. They glued his beard to his face to reduce its outline, so that it could be painted out in post-production. It didn't help.
