Originally, Quentin Tarantino pitched this to John Travolta the same time as he was preparing to film Pulp Fiction (1994). Travolta was not interested in working on a vampire movie, and wanted to work on Pulp Fiction instead. He ended up being nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for that film and it revitalized his failing career.
