Laura Dern was confirmed to return in September 2019 alongside Sam Neill's Dr Alan Grant and Jeff Goldblum's Dr Ian Malcolm. However, talking to Digital Spy, she explained that Ellie's comeback had started to be discussed when she was filming The Last Jedi. "They had been speaking about it for some time. What would it look like? What do you think she would do for a living now? All those questions had started," Dern explained. "I was making a Star Wars movie at Pinewood [and producer] Frank Marshall asked me to come for a visit, so that was my first re-entry back to a set with a raptor and his friends. We started having more and more conversation around it, and it seemed really exciting to me."
