Director Mohamed Diab told France's HuffPost in March 2022 that he had met actor Gaspard Ulliel for the first time in 2011 at the Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival in France, where Ulliel was presenting his film L'art d'aimer (2011) and Diab was presenting his film 678 (2010). They had a conversation at the festival and Ulliel told Diab that he had loved 'Cairo 678', and back then Diab knew that he wanted to work with Ulliel. It was Diab who invited Ulliel to play Anton Mogart in Moon Knight. Diab said that Ulliel had everything that would make him into a Hollywood star: charisma, looks and talent. During the filming of Moon Knight, it was Ulliel's humility that marked the director, he said, "He had such an approach that it felt like it was his first time filming. It was an honor to have him on set. I was one of the only people to know how well known he was in France." Diab also said that at the end of filming, he told Ulliel that the audience would like to see him again in other Marvel projects.
