The shipwreck sequence was the last scene to be added before the film's release. Since it is too expensive to build one ship from scratch, only to destroy it, Sir Ridley Scott opted to use a combination of outtakes of the siege of Jerusalem, shots of Balian with his attire digitally altered, a CGI model of a ship, archive footage of a heavy sea storm, and outtakes from his own earlier film L'Albatross - Oltre la tempesta (1996). The creation of this "non-existent scene" is explained in detail on the four-disc Director's Cut DVD.
