Ricky Whittle's premature departure from the series was not due to conflicts with the cast (whom he has openly praised) but rather from a feud between him and Executive Producer Jason Rothenberg. In an interview shortly after his last episode in 2016, Whittle described Rothenberg as a "bully" who frequently eliminated his lines and screen time without good explanation. According to Whittle, Rothenberg would not answer his phone or return his messages to discuss the matter. Whittle described Rothenberg's behavior as "untenable" and made a formal request through his agent to be written out of the show early and released from his contract, so he could pursue other projects. Rothenberg agreed to the request and Lincoln's eventual demise was moved up by several episodes. Rothenberg issued a cursory, if not facile, press release about the cast shake-up stating "Ricky Whittle is a talented actor; I appreciate his work on The 100 and wish him all the best moving forward."
