Marie Antoinette main affair during her marriage was a romantic relationship with the Swedish diplomat Axel von Fersen the Younger (1755-1810). Fersen later fought in many wars and rose to the rank of Marshal of the Realm, becoming one of the most powerful members of the Swedish court. In 1810, Fersen was widely suspected of having murdered the then-recently deceased Charles August, Crown Prince of Sweden (1768-1810). Fersen was killed by an angry lynch mob, who wanted to punish him for the supposed murder.
