The casting team for this show appeared to have a marked love of 1970s and 1980s television shows and movies. They cast stars from television shows Growing Pains (1985), Family Ties (1982), Family Matters (1989), The Cosby Show (1984), Moonlighting (1985), Married... with Children (1987), The Love Boat (1976), and Good Times (1974); and movies The Breakfast Club (1985)*, the Star Trek film franchise, Ferris Beuller's Day Off (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), Pretty in Pink (1986), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II (1989), La Bamba (1987), and Revenge of the Nerds (1984). This is far from a complete list. *Four of the five students in The Breakfast Club (1985) have appeared on this show. The only one not cast was Emilio Estevez, although Shawn used his name as a cover while investigating in season three, episode thirteen, "Any Given Night at 10PM, 9PM Central", as well as season eight, episode four, "Someone's Got a Woody".
