Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche had both been well known Hollywood stars since the 1930's. However, Trading Places was the first time they had appeared together in a movie. Ameche had spent most of his early career at 20th Century Fox, While Bellamy was contracted first to Warner Brothers, then RKO, which in the days of the old 'studio system' would have made a previous pairing when they were younger almost impossible.
