Recurring gag: During his fifteen-year tenure as a spy, Michael worked mainly in eastern Europe and the Middle East. As a result, he speaks fluent Russian and Farsi, and describes his command of the Polish language as rusty. He doesn't know Spanish, and is mocked repeatedly throughout the series for living in Miami without being able to converse in Spanish. He makes no effort to learn it even though not knowing the city's second most common language regularly trips him up on missions. He also apparently never picked it up despite spending his childhood and most of his teens in Miami. It takes being sent undercover to the Dominican Republic (six years after series start) to learn it. A little.
